Curating Digital Spaces
Curating Digital Spaces focuses on ‘curating’ as a way of ‘caring’ for a collection by electronically arranging, sorting and selecting artefacts and artworks for exhibition in digital spaces. In English, the origins of the term ‘curating’, reveals Latin origins from the word ‘curatus’ and is defined as spiritual care, relating to the early collections of museums and their relationship to the spiritual or religious artefacts of a community. As curating has evolved, the term has expanded to consider ‘digital’, meaning in ‘electronic form, readable and manipulable by computer’ with ‘space’ defined as an ‘unlimited and incalculably three-dimensional realm or expanse’ in which all materials are located or events occur. Together the term ‘Curating Digital Spaces’ is a broad umbrella for curating and presentation practices that occur in electronic spaces and is often reflective of curatorial practices of the institutions hosting the exhibition and the intended audience.
Curating digital spaces can simply be the presentation of digital artefacts in a virtual gallery but can also be a hybrid physical exhibition with digital components such as augmented reality. Curating digitally can also be developed on various social media and gaming platforms, with aims to diversify audiences. It can also include Virtual Reality, digital projection and immersive gallery spaces. It can also potentially be a network of digital platforms of institutional collections to create an expansive connected yet non-centralised network of collection items. As technology continues to advance, the potential for creativity in curating digital spaces also continues to evolve.
